10 Ways for College Students to Make Money Online – Chip Away Your Debt

Being a college student is no doubt a complicated time in anyone’s life. With increasing class work loads, piling student debt, and most likely some form of part time job, college students have a lot to manage. And when it comes to budgeting both time and money, there isn’t much (if any) left over.

Earning extra money to pay for student debts and living costs can be hard to do while in school. Your class schedule can be erratic, which makes keeping a job difficult while you work around your education. Not to mention class work loads can be extremely heavy, leaving you with no time for a shift-based job. However, there are ways to earn some supplementary cash online to help pay the bills, and chip away at the mounting student debt that you’re probably facing.

Eliminate College DebtEarning money online has it’s advantages, such as:

  • The ability to make money from home
  • The freedom to work on your own time
  • The potential to earn much more than minimum wage

Although it also has it’s disadvantages, such as:

  • No guarantee you’ll make money
  • There are a lot of scams
  • Can take time to see results

Keeping this in mind, I have created a list of possible money making solutions that are both time-effective, and legitimate. You don’t want to be paying into promises of earning tons of money, only to get nothing out of it. Nor do you want to waste your time on click-ad websites or anything of that nature, that will waste your time, and only earn you pennies.

Here are 10 ways for college students to make money online:

  1. Online surveys
  2. Music reviews
  3. Website Testing
  4. Offer services
  5. Freelance blog writing
  6. Data entry
  7. Start a blog
  8. Buy and sell using Ebay
  9. Sell homemade products on Etsy
  10. Affiliate marketing

There are many other ways to earn money online, but these are my top ten ways for college students to make honest money online without the need for any experience, or education. These can be done at home, and you can get started right away.

If you have any other suggestions that didn’t make this list, please take a minute to add it within the comment section below.

Use MySurvey to get paid for surveys online

Online Surveys

These are a great resource for you to earn guaranteed money online. It’s exactly as it sounds too; you fill out surveys, you get paid! You will also be asked to take part in consumer research to influence products and services, so it’s not just boring questionnaires!

I highly recommend taking a look at MySurvey, they have an incredibly easy to follow, step by step signup process, and a wide range of payout options. They are a legitimate paid survey website that help contribute to the consumer economy by paying you (as a consumer) for your input on upcoming products and services.

In 2014 alone, they paid their worldwide members over $40 million! So yes, you can earn some good money here if you like answering questions. But don’t take this as an opportunity to just make money, answer honestly and provide quality information. Don’t take advantage of the system!

This is my first recommendation because it’s the easiest, and guaranteed to payout. The payouts will be less than some of the other methods, but as I said, you’re guaranteed to get paid. So if you’re in a tight spot, and need some extra cash quickly, then this is a good option for you.

Music Reviews

Use Slicethepie to earn money for music reviews!Similar to online surveys, you’ll be asked to give your opinion on music, and can earn money for each review you publish! It’s a great way to earn some cash, and just like the surveys, you’re guaranteed to make money. Who doesn’t love listening to music? This is a great way for anyone, regardless of being in school, to earn some extra money.

Usually when you want to listen to music, it costs you money! But with Slicethepie, listening to music earns you money! I highly recommend heading over there and signing up if you want to earn while you listen. They have a great program, incredibly helpful for both students looking to make some extra cash, and artists looking to some constructive reviews of their music.

Their website is the leading paid review program on the internet for music, and brand related consumer reviews. They receive millions of reviews from people around the world that go to help striving artists build their brand, and fine-tune their music.

It’s not only a great way to earn some money in a fun, and entertaining way, but you can also be a part of upcoming bands and music artists. If you love music, then this is definitely the right choice for you to start earning some extra cash online.

Website Testing

UserTestingA great way to earn some extra cash is to test websites that are “under construction”, and get paid for your feedback. UserTesting is a great website that allows you to test websites, and earn money for helping businesses find errors within their site.

The benefits to this method of earning money online, is that you can do your website reviews whenever you have time, you are guaranteed to get paid for your reviews, and you don’t need any experience on how a website works. All you need to be able to do is navigate, and use a website just like you would with any other site online. Easy!

Fill out the application form, and do a quick trial test, then you’ll be verified and ready to start earning money for your website reviews. I highly recommend this option if you like exploring websites, and need money quickly. The guaranteed payouts are a nice bonus to this option, and will help get you some cash immediately.

Offer Services

FiverrIf you have a special skill, or even just experience doing something that others might be interested in paying for, then you can offer your services online. If you are good at graphic design, research, video editing, or anything that can help others, then you can market that service online.

The best place to do this, is Fiverr. Here you can list your service, request a specific price, and watch as people start asking for your help! This is not limited to work online, and many people offer other services to other local individuals in need of some help!

Although this can be a great way to earn quite a bit of money if your service is in high enough demand, you also have the potential to not earn very much. Competition for some services can be steep, so getting customers is not always easy. I recommend this option to those with a specific skill-set, and are available to meet deadlines, as people won’t pay you if you don’t do what you promise in a timely fashion!

Freelance Blog Writing

UpworkIf you’re a good writer, can meet deadlines, and aren’t afraid to do some research, then freelance blog writing will be a great fit for you. The upside to freelance blog writing, is you can make a ton of money, with some businesses paying hundreds of dollars for a single blog post. However, these need to be professional, well written articles, so this is not as easy as some of the other options mentioned in this article.

Sign up for Upwork, and you can start applying to work with businesses to write blog posts, articles, and more. The payouts are different depending on the details of the job. This option also takes more time, so if you’re looking for a quick payout, this may not be the best method for you.

There are a lot of people that write as freelance blog journalists full time, so there definitely is some great opportunity for you if you enjoy writing. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to make some more serious money, and are willing to put in some work for it.

Data Entry

FreelancerAs one of the more mindless methods of earning some quick cash online, data entry can be painstakingly boring. However, you can do it while pretty much doing anything else. The money you earn isn’t great for most data entry jobs online, but as I said, it’s mindless and can be done while doing other things once you get the hang of it.

Data entry is just as it sounds; entering data for businesses. It doesn’t require any kind of knowledge or experience in business, so anyone can do it. This option might be good for someone who isn’t really looking to add any extra workload to their schedule, while also earning a few extra bucks on the side.

Again, this is not an option to make any kind of serious money, but it does guarantee results if you can put in some time here and there. I suggest checking out Freelancer, they have some of the best data entry jobs available, and it’s easy to sign up and get to work!

Start a Blog

WordPressIf you enjoy social media, and communicating with others online, then starting a blog might be worth considering. It’s a great way to both voice your opinion in a professional, engaging way, as well as earn you some money! There are plenty of opportunities for you to earn money when you start a blog, such as advertising, promoting, sponsors, donations, and more.

Of course, starting a blog means you need a website. Creating a website is easy, and only takes 30 seconds, no exaggerations! It’s incredibly simple to do using WordPress, so if you think that creating a blog might be right for you, then WordPress is the best platform to get started!

This is not a guaranteed source of income, and if you do earn money it won’t be right away. So this option is more recommended for someone willing to dedicate some time to see results. If that person is you, then you can earn quite a pretty penny for starting a successful blog. Many bloggers end up becoming full-time!

So, starting a blog can be a fun way to have a voice online about a particular topic, as well as lead to some online revenue. However, it won’t earn you money right away, nor are you guaranteed to earn anything at all. On the flip-side, you have the potential to earn much more than many of the other options online.

Buy and Sell on Ebay

EbayAnother great way to earn money online that can be overlooked, is buying and selling using Ebay. Unlike the other methods mentioned in this list, this method presents a potential risk. Of course, there is the possibility that you buy a few products with the intention to resell them at a higher value, but aren’t able to find buyers.

Another downside to selling on Ebay, is you need some investment money to start. You don’t need much, but if you’re already tight on cash, then this might not be a possibility for you. However, if you have some experience using Ebay, and can invest a small amount of startup money, then you can make quite a bit of cash.

The most important thing you need to be successful at buying and selling on Ebay, is to know what something is worth. Don’t buy unless you know you’re getting a deal, and that you can flip it for a profit. Also, don’t expect results right away. If you’ve ever tried to sell anything on Ebay, then you know that it can take some time to find a buyer. So be patient.

Sell Homemade Products on Etsy

EtsyIf you’re crafty, creative, or otherwise enjoy making things, then you might be able to sell what you make on Etsy. Etsy is the largest online homemade-marketplace; similar to Ebay but for handmade and unique products. This is not a guaranteed method of earning money online, but if you have a talent that you think you can capitalize on, then this is the place to do it.

Again, this is not a guaranteed way to earn money, but you can earn quite a bit if you can create something of value. Handmade products are becoming the new “fad” as people are starting to seek out other options than the commercially made goods in stores. People want unique, one-of-a-kind stuff, and if you can make it, you can sell it for quite a lot.

If you need cash quickly, this is probably not the best option for you. You need to first make the product, then market it on Etsy, and only once you’ve found a buyer will you earn any money. But like I said, you can earn quite a bit depending on what you make, so the earning potential can be very high.

Affiliate Marketing

Wealthy AffiliateIf you like creating websites, or would like to learn how, then you can earn money by becoming an affiliate marketer through that site. As an affiliate, you can earn a lot of money online, but it takes some time to see results. You don’t need any experience in creating websites, or marketing, so anyone can learn to be successful and even work full-time.

There is some training you’ll need if you are a complete beginner, so if you already have a full schedule then this might not be the best option for you. However, it can be done on your own time, and at your own pace, so if you don’t need the cash urgently, then I highly recommend taking this into consideration.

There is an amazing free training course available at Wealthy Affiliate, where they teach you exactly how to create a website, and then build content to start earning you money. Many people use this program to earn full-time wages, and started from complete beginners. The training is the best in the industry, and the course is completely free.

If you have some time to invest, and want to earn a more substantial paycheck online, then I highly recommend the training at Wealthy Affiliate. However, if you need cash quickly, and don’t have the time to put into the training, then this probably is not the best option for you.

My Top 3 Recommendations – For the Undecided

If you’re still undecided about which option will suit you the best, you can always try them out! They’re all free to sign up, and there’s no harm in deleting your account if you don’t like the program. But to give you a good place to start, I suggest these two methods as my 2nd and 3rd top recommendations:

  1. Website Testing is a great way to earn guaranteed money quickly. Usertesting is an incredible program that offers respectful payouts, as well as helps businesses to create a better experience for their website visitors. I highly recommend this option as a guaranteed payout option if you’re looking for cash quickly and reliably.
  2. Start a Blog and the earning potential can be much higher than website testing. However, it is not a guaranteed money making method, and can often take time to see results. But if you have time, and are willing to put in some work to receive a higher revenue, then use WordPress to start building your blog.

MY #1 RECOMMENDATION on ways for college students to make money online, is affiliate marketing. The earning potential within affiliate marketing is huge, even if you only have a few hours a week to work on building your website. It’s not a guaranteed method of earning money, but if you’re persistent then you WILL see big results.

There is incredible online training available for free that has helped hundreds of thousands of people create their very own online business. Affiliate marketing can earn you substantial money that could keep you going through college, or even pay off you student debts. If you’re a motivated individual, with entrepreneurial qualities, then this is the right choice for you.

This is a great list for someone looking to make side cash. I have worked on a few of these for a while. It can really make a difference in you life even when you don’t think its a lot of money.

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Samantha,

I agree with you! Even a little bit of extra money here and there makes a big difference in the long run. Most of these methods can be done at any time, at your own pace, and for as long as you have time for. So they’re perfect for students, or even others with full-time jobs!

  2. I tried surveys at some point during my college career but the payouts on them weren’t worth my time as they were always small.

I am curious at to how much website testing pays. Do they pay you by the browsing session? Also, what is a common payout that a website owner would give a visitor for navigating the website and giving feedback?

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Jessie,

Great question, and I agree, a lot of paid survey sites can often be a waste of time. And although MySurvey does offer more lucrative payouts than other sites, if you’re looking to make more serious money then it probably isn’t a great choice.

At UserTesting, you get paid $10 per website test you perform. You do however need a mic, or some sort of recording device (a lot of new-age headphones will have a mic). This is because they’re looking for a more detailed analysis of the website as you navigate it, as opposed to a general review at the end. It offers much more insight for the developer, which is why they pay a relatively high price for each test.
I highly suggest you take a look!

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask,

I like how your blog is laid out. Thank you for this. My son will find this reading insightful. He is not far from college and looking for extra money.

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Lane,

I’m glad you found this article to be useful, and I hope your son can use one of these methods to earn a bit of extra cash on the side.
      School is expensive!

      All the best,

  4. Stefan Vogt says:

Hi Isaya, there are some interesting jobs to do. I think I try to write music reviews. How many words do they expect me to write? I can do that while working on my website.
Thanks for the tip, I already check slicethepie.

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Stefan,

You are required to write about 50 words, or a short paragraph review, as well as a star rating out of 10. You have to listen to at least 90 seconds of each song before submitting your review.

It’s important to leave good reviews, because the quality of your reviews determines the amount you get paid.

      Hope this helps,

      Isaya

  5. Mack says:

    Great read!

I recently graduated from college about 2 years ago and I can sure say I wish I knew what I do now back then! With this in mind I will definitely recommend this to any one going back to school.

There seems to be endless opportunities online. I would love to see how far along I would be with my online ventures if I would have started back in college. It does take time to see big results but if you put in the time and the effort, the potentials are endless!

    Cheers

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Mack,

I agree, it could have helped to know about these while you were in school!
But there’s no reason that you couldn’t take advantage of these opportunities now, or in the future if you’re ever in need of a bit of extra money. It’s there and it’s easy to get!

      All the best,

      Isaya

  6. Sarah says:

Whatever work you starts, it require, hard work and dedication and then you see the desired result. Because students already have tough schedule, they hardly can do any physical work because they have not enough hours left to spend on work to earn at side. But earning online is a safe and easiest way for students to earn money without disturbing their academic schedule. Keep sharing such informative posts. Have a nice time!

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Sarah,

It’s true, students have less and less time to keep part time jobs to pay for living costs and school tuition. After leaving college it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll have student debt.
Why not try to pay off some of that debt before you’re out of school? Get ahead by getting out of your debt sooner, to actually reap the rewards of your hard work at school!

      All the best,

      Isaya
