Wix is an incredibly simple and sophisticated website builder, easy for anyone to use. Whether you’re building a blog, or online store, Wix has the customization capabilities to suite any need.

Setting up your very own website, and publishing it to the internet can be done in just a few minutes. If you follow these few simple steps, you’ll be ready to create content, and attract lots of visitors to your elegant, professional new website.

How to build a website in Wix in 5 simple steps:

  1. Wix.comClick on “Get Started”
  2. Sing in, or create an account
  3. Create your website
  4. Choose a category
  5. Select a template, and start editing

Follow along with this guide to get your website up and running with Wix, one of the easiest, most advanced website builders in the industry. It only takes a few minutes!

Step By Step Guide To Creating a Website With Wix – Get Started Now

1. Visit Wix.com and click on “Get Started”.

Click on "Get Started"

2. The next step will be to sign in, or create an account if you don’t already have one. You can also sign in through Facebook or Google, as two added alternatives.

Create your Wix account, or login with Facebook or Google

3. Once you have your own Wix account and are logged in, you’ll be prompted to create your website! Just click on “Create Your Website” to get started. But before you do, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Wix offers a couple of cool features to take a look at before starting your website:

  • Get Inspired – Browse a selection of beautifully created websites to give you some ideas and inspiration for your own website. This is a great tool if you’re unsure of what you want your website to look like, or simply to see the full customizing potential of Wix.Click "Get Inspired" to preview beautiful Wix websites
  • Hire a Wix Expert – If you’re less interested in creating the website yourself, and just want to get started publishing content, or selling your product, you can hire someone to do it for you! Hire an expert to create a professional, fully-functional website and have it up and running in no time.Click "Get Started" to hire a Wix expert to build a website for you

I highly recommend taking a look at the “Get Inspired” page if you’re a beginner. However, hiring a Wix expert to build your website for you is not recommended right away. Wix is incredibly easy to use, and it doesn’t take long to create a professional website! Try it for yourself before calling in the pros, you yourself could be a pro in no time.

Click on "Create Your Website" to get started!

4. This is where the fun begins as you start to actually build the foundation for your site. Here you’ll have to choose a category for your website. This is also called a “niche”, which is very important for the structure and direction of your website.

You can choose from an array of options:

  • Choose a category that your target niche falls underBusiness
  • Online Store
  • Photography
  • Music
  • Designer
  • Restaurant & Food
  • Accommodation
  • Events
  • Blog
  • Beauty & Wellness
  • Portfolio & CV
  • Other

Choosing the right category is less important than choosing the niche. The categories are only there to suggest appropriate themes, but you can use any theme for any website if it suites your site needs.

5. Once you have chosen the category, you’ll be prompted to decide between starting your website from scratch, and choosing from a template or theme. I suggest choosing from a template or theme if you are a beginner.

Select the template option to choose a template

All you have to do now is browse the growing list of Wix website templates to get started! Take your time and find one you like, but don’t spend hours on end choosing the right template. A template is a template because it’s only the foundation for your website. The extensive customization options allow you to really optimize your site. So once you have chosen a template, you can always go back and change your website theme later without loosing any content.

Just click on “Edit” to start working on your website, or “View” to get a preview before starting.

Click "Edit" to start working on your new website!

After only a few seconds, your website will be built and ready for editing! One thing to note is that your website will not be published until you click the blue “Publish” button. This gives you time to edit your website without it being published to the internet for others to view until it’s ready.

Once your website is ready to edit, there will be a short instructional video to guide you through the basics of creating your own website. It’s incredibly easy to edit and build content for your website, plus the Wix help center is quite useful in a jam.

Watch the tutorial video and get started!

Now that all the easy stuff is out of the way, it’s time to start building content for your website. Whether that be blog posts, articles, portfolios, etc., your content will be the backbone of your site, and what will attract visitors to see your website.

Create good content = Get consistent traffic

How To Build Content For Your New Website

Quality content is the key to a successful website, and creating quality content is not as hard as you may think. You don’t need to be an author to publish good content. All you need is a voice to speak from, and accurate information that informs your readers.

People don’t want to read an English essay online, they want to read writing that has a voice, and is interesting and engaging. If you have a voice, and write as informatively as impossible, you’ll create content that keeps your readers coming back!

There are many resources out there to help teach you about building a successful website, but none are as useful and thorough as the training at Wealthy Affiliate. The training provided will teach you everything you need to know about creating quality content that engages, and informs your readers. It’s completely free, so I highly recommend at least taking a look at the first training module to see what it’s all about!

Building Your Website With Wix Vs. WordPress – Why WordPress Is Better

Although Wix has a great website building platform that creates elegant, professional websites, and is incredibly easy to use; the extensive online reach of WordPress far outshines that of Wix. WordPress powers 29% of websites on the internet because of:

  • The advanced management dashboard
  • An extensive list of plugins to further customize the functionality of your site
  • A growing list of thousands of free themes to choose from

If you don’t have your heart set on creating your website with Wix, I suggest taking a look at how to build a website with WordPress. There’s a reason they host almost 1/3 of all websites online!

I hope this beginner’s guide on how to build a website in Wix was helpful, and that I answered all of your questions. If you still have any questions, or would like to leave a comment, feel free to leave them below and I’ll get back to you right away! Your success is important to me!

If you want a free website and want to build it yourself, Wix is the answer.
In the past I built a few Wix websites and it’s really rather easy and enjoyable to build.
There’s easy to follow instructions and you can build your website to your liking.
And if you don’t like something you can easily edit it and change your mind.
    Wix is great!

      Hey Rob,

I agree, Wix is an absolutely amazing website builder. I’ve built several websites on Wix, and it’s always a fun experience.
It’s definitely a great way to learn the ropes of web design, and how you can optimize the functionality of your site.

However, I have recently come to prefer WordPress over Wix because of the availability of themes and plugins. WordPress has a list of tens of thousands of free plugins to optimize your site to your specifications. They’re a bit more advanced than Wix, so if you’re a slightly more advanced site builder, Wix might not be worth your time.

But that’s also my opinion. Thousands of people use Wix for their websites, so there’s definitely nothing wrong with it.

It is easy to create a website these days, and there are a lot of places to start for free. Wealthy Affiliate is the only place I’ve tried, but I can’t imagine any other platform being better. How many templates are there to choose from on Wix, and how good is the training?

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Gary,

There are hundreds of Wix themes to choose from to customize your website exactly the way you want it. They also have no training (aside from a few tutorial videos) on how to build your website and create content. For that, I highly recommend Wealthy Affiliate. Since you are already a member, you know what they have to offer in terms of training.

If you’re looking to learn how to build a successful website that earns you money, you’ll need to take advantage of the free training offered over at Wealthy Affiliate.

Hope this clarifies things for you,

I have seen many of my friends build their website using the wix platform. I am curious to know if this has any unique features that wordpress does not have?

I only have experience in building websites through WordPress and can’t exactly make an informed decision on how the two platforms compare.

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Jessie,

One of the biggest differences between WordPress and Wix, in my opinion, is that each have their own specific target function.
Wix is very visual, giving you lots of freedom to add visuals, buttons, pictures, and text boxes anywhere you like.
WordPress on the other hand, is much more about the content, and optimizing your site for search engines like Google.

In my opinion, WordPress is the better option if you wish to create a business website that gets ranked into google, whereas Wix might be better for a simple blog, or for a visual website where customization is important. Wix is also a little more simple to use than WordPress, so for beginners it might be a good option.

However, if you need help building your website, there’s plenty of free training available online. I outline in detail the best free online course within my #1 recommendation.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask!

I was so confused on whether to join Wix. or wealthy affiliates but after reading your article I understood the difference and I am happy you made those differences. I am happy I choose Wealthy Affiliates to wix. and I must agree with you that wealthy affiliates will guard you through out the process. So far, I have been watching the videos and every single step is clear and complete. Thank you

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Akwi,

I’m so glad that you’ve found the training at Wealthy Affiliate to be helpful. It really is a unique program that offers everything you could possibly need! And the fact that it’s free is absolutely astonishing.
