Creating a successful business online with affiliate marketing isn’t possible without a fully-functional, developed website. Your website will be the foundation for your business, and a well designed site will be the key to your success. WordPress gives you the tools to create a professional website without the need for experience in web design.

Building your very own website has never been easier than it is today. Thanks to the amazing website managing platform provided by WordPress, you can create an elegant website in just a few minutes! As the leading website builder in the industry, WordPress hosts over 76 million websites online with this figure growing daily.

I recommend using WordPress to build your website. This advanced website building platform is incredibly simple for anyone to use, and creating your website is completely free. After following this short WordPress tutorial, you’ll have your website up and running in no time!

How to create a website with WordPress in 5 steps:

  • Click on “Get Started”
  • Choose a website functionality (i.e. blog, website, portfolio, online store)
  • Pick a website address (domain)
  • Choose a feature package
  • Create your account

After following these 5 simple steps, you’ll have your very own website on the internet, just waiting to have content added. This simple process can be completed in just a few minutes, it’s completely free, and will be the first step to creating a successful website online.

The Steps to Building Your Very Own Website With WordPress

1. The first step to building your website is go to WordPress.com and click on “Get Started”.

Click on "Get Started"

2. Next you’ll be asked to choose the type of website you’ll be creating. You can choose from a blog, a website, a portfolio, or an online store. Choosing the right template for your website is important to make the most of your content. However, you can always change it later if you decide your website is going in a different direction, so don’t worry about this too much in the beginning.

Blog

  • Use this option when publishing article based content
  • Typically used to create personalized opinion articles

Website

  • Use this option for informational/promotional content
  • Typically used to promote or provide information in regards to products/services

Portfolio

  • Use this option when publishing content to promote a brand or yourself
  • Typically used to promote an individual or specific brand

Online Store

  • Use this option for any kind of e-commerce
  • Typically used for online businesses that sell products directly through their website

For the purpose of this tutorial, I’ll create a blog post.

Choose between a blog, a website, a portfolio, and an online store

3. After choosing the type of website you’d like to create, you’ll be prompted to give your website an address. This will be your website domain, so make sure it’s relevant to your niche. You cannot choose a domain name that is already taken, so you may not get the first domain you search for.

Your website will be created as a “.wordpress” website because it’s hosted by WordPress. This is a great option for beginners because the alternative is to purchase your own domain. Domain’s aren’t expensive, but if you’re just a beginner, I’d suggest just using the domains provided by WordPress until you’re ready to take the next step and purchase your own domain.

Alternatively, if you already own your own domain and would like to transfer it to the WordPress platform, you can do this as well by following the link below the search bar.

Choose an address that targets your niche

4. Once you have found and selected a domain address for your website, the next step will be to select the feature package you’d like for your website. There are varying options for your level of experience, and website requirements. If you are creating your first website, I’d recommend selecting the free option, which is best for students or beginners. This way you’ll have access to almost all features without paying spending any money, and you can learn the ropes of building a successful website.

There is also the best option for hobbyists, which is only $5/month, and gives you access to some useful features for the casual website builder.

With the Personal package, you’ll have access to:

  • A free custom domain
  • Email and live chat support
  • All free features

If you plan on building a long-term website, I’d consider choosing this option to get the most out of WordPress. However, you can always change your feature package later, so there’s no harm in selecting the free version and getting your website up and running for free.

You can build a website for completely free

5. The final step to creating your website is to create your account by adding your email and creating a password. This step is quite self-explanatory, so I won’t spend much time addressing it. Fill out the boxes and continue on as you normally would when creating an account.

Once you have created your account, your website will be built in a matter of seconds. Once it’s ready, click on “View My Site” to be brought to your very own website! All you have to do now is create your content, and customize your layout. The possibilities are endless, and the only limit is your imagination.

Click on "View My Site" to check out your new website!

At the bottom of this page you’ll be given an example of your web address. You’ll also be prompted to purchase your own domain. You can ignore this for now until you’ve built some content, and are ready to start getting traffic to your website. Traffic is the ultimate goal of any website, and owning your own domain is important for gaining consistent, growing traffic.

How Do I Build Content For My New Website?

Creating your initial website is incredibly easy, and takes no time at all. Once you’ve built the foundation for your successful, online website (whether it be a blog, online store, etc.), you’ll need to publish content to engage your visitors. Building content that keeps your readers on your page is important, because you want people to stay on your site for as long as possible!

There are many approaches to writing engaging content, and everyone has their own way to engage their audience. It all depends on the type of website you’re creating, but ultimately it all boils down to targeting a specific niche. Being as thorough, and as accurate as possible in regards to that niche is the best way to create content.

There are many great teaching resources available to you online, and I recommend taking some time to learn how to make the most out of your content. The internet is huge, and getting your website noticed among all the others can be difficult. I highly recommend the Wealthy Affiliate online University, they’ll teach you everything you need to know about creating high-ranking content, and monetizing your website. The training is free, so there’s no harm in seeing what they have to offer.

Why You Need a Website – No Website = No Income

To earn an income online, you’ll need a functional website on the internet. Once you’ve created a website, and began to publish content, you can start to think about how to earn money from your site. There are a few ways of doing this, but the best is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a way of earning money without having to sell products or services, or even promote them!

Anyone with a website can become an affiliate marketer, and it doesn’t require any marketing or sales skills. With affiliate marketing, you can earn a passive income, or create a full-time business online from your own home.

It all starts with building your very own website!

Wow, how cool! I had no idea you could build your own website for free on WordPress! This seems like a great way to get your feet wet before you pull the trigger on purchasing a domain and having to figure out hosting and all that kind of stuff that comes with setting up a full on website.

How long are these sites good for? Can you keep building on them as long as you want or do they have an expiration date?

    1. Isaya says:

      Hey Craig,

I agree! It is really awesome that WordPress hosts these free websites for you. It’s no doubt very useful for beginners to learn the ropes before they, like you said “pull the trigger” on all the other hosting and domain options.

Your free site has no expiration, and will remain on the internet for as long as you keep it there. So there’s no rush in figuring it all out quickly. You can take your time and work at your own pace with no worry that your site will expire!

If you are a beginner though, I highly suggest heading over to Wealthy Affiliate (link in the sidebar) because they offer industry leading training on how to build your website, and actually earn a substantial passive income from it! They also host multiple websites for you (using WordPress), and it’s totally free to sign up and use. Definitely worth checking out if you’re thinking of making some money from your site!

Hope this helps, any other questions don’t hesitate to ask!
